Lawyers call for action on gender violence

BY WALLACE MAWIRE
HARARE - An Hiv/Aids and human rights charter recently launched by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) calls on the state to develop a legislative framework to protect women from gender based violence (GBV), including amending the constitution to ensure conformity with human rights standards as enshrined in international and regional human rights instruments.

The charter notes that GBV which fuels the prevalence of Hiv/Aids among women and girls must be eradicated as a matter of urgency. The charter is a consolidation of various human rights standards and norms relevant to the protection of people living with Hiv/Aids as enshrined and guaranteed in the constitution of Zimbabwe and regional human rights instruments which Zimbabwe is obliged to uphold.

The state has enacted legislation and put in place policies that seek to protect and promote human rights such as the domestic violence Act 2007, National behavioural change strategy for the prevention of sexual transmission of Hiv/Aids 2006-2010 and the National Gender Policy 2004, just to mention a few.

The charter is a result of concerted efforts by many national partners who are committed to ensuring dignity, justice and equality for all. The initiative was carried out with financial assistance of TROCAIRE, HIVOS and the European Commission (EC).
