Mushrooms kill staring soldiers

MASVINGO - About seventeen Zimbabwean soldiers are said to have died after eating poisonous mushrooms and 500 others were hospitalized, in an incident that took place at Masvingo's fourth Brigade late last year, but was kept under wraps by army chiefs.

The survivors were rushed to Masvingo General Hospital. A doctor at the institution, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident.

The doctor said the affected soldiers had brought their own food to the barracks, which included poisonous mushrooms, as the staff canteen had run out of stocks.

A Zimbabwe National Army captain, who did not want to be named, dismissed the claims and accused the MDC of embarking on cheap political propaganda aimed at discrediting the government.

“In future, if you come with such stupid stories aimed at discrediting the government, you will land yourself in trouble,” the captain warned. – CAJ News
