Talks to go ahead – Mbeki, MDC threatens withdrawal

HARARE, Zimbabwe - ZIMBAWE'S main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), is threatening to pull out of the ongoing power-sharing talks, accusing the ruling ZANU-PF of lack of commitment to the dialogue aimed at finding a solution to the country's political and economic woes.

MDC spokesperson, Nelson Chamisa, told CAJ News on Thursday that his party’s patience was being stretched to the limit, hence the need to consider withdrawing from the negotiating table.

The threat comes after President Robert Mugabe told journalists in Zambia on Wednesday during the burial of the country’s President Levy Mwanawasa, that he would go ahead to form a new government of national unity if Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the main faction of the MDC, did not sign the document already agreed to during the talks.

“We feel frozen at the moment and if the MDC does not want to see the country move, then we will be left with no choice than to form a new government without them,” said Mugabe.

But the MDC insist Mugabe is the problem.
