Government violates media rights

BY CHIEF REPORTER

HARARE - Press freedom groups have condemned the Zimbabwe government for snooping on e-mails of editors of State-owned newspapers in a bid to gauge their loyalty to President Robert Mugabe.

The spying activity came to light during a hearing of Editor Bhekinkosi Ncube of the vernacular Ndebele State-owned magazine Umthunywa on October 7, where Zimpapers CEO Justin Mutasa revealed that he had authorised the use of password-cracking software to hack into the editors private email accounts from 3 to 15 August. Ncube claimed he was working on instructions of the Ministry of Information, which of late has been editing State newspapers through the office of the permanent secretary, George Charamba.
