Jibilika grand finale set for November

National finals for JIBILIKA Dance Festival 2008 will be held on the 22nd of November at the magnificent Rainbow Towers' Harare International Conference Centre (HICC). This follows the completion of a five month provincial preliminary exercise.

The project launched last year, became the country’s biggest and first ever eclectic dance competition. Born out of the need to promote unsung talent and create jobs for the youths. It celebrates the richness and diversity of dance across Zimbabwe and beyond.

Twenty five dance groups will converge in the capital to battle for honors in the five category contest. In an exclusive interview with The Zimbabwean, Jibilika founder and director Plot Mhako expressed optimism saying, The festival has grown from strength to strength as evidenced by overwhelming support from the artists, the general public and the corporate community. The audience should brace up for thrilling performances as the level of seriousness is very critical.

The project has remained resolute in the face of many adversities and has so far attracted sponsorship from The Zimbabwean, Tyrone’s Cosmetology, Faithwear, Shineford, Alliance Francaise, Ruffcuts (S.A). Calling on the corporate sector to continue supporting the arts industry, Mhako said, Today, cultural sponsorship stands out as the second most important marketing tool after sport and therefore more effective and good for a company’s image.

Attention is highly expected in the much contested Hip Hop category pitting Harare’s Extreme Blitz, Kaotics from Bulawayo, Trinity from Marondera , Mutare’s Born to Dance and Play Maters from Victoria Falls. Big prizes are up for grabs at this year’s fete.

Since inception Jibilika has propelled a number of artists and dance groups to dizzy heights securing them contracts with local and international promoters such as the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) and Germany based Hot Afrika.
