Land grabbers evicted

BULAWAYO - 50 families, including war veterans, have been evicted from a farm in Umguza, Matabeleland North by a Zanu (PF) member and brother of Foreign Affairs Minister, Simbarashe Mumbengegwi.

The families were evicted by Tinus Mumbengegwi on October 10 from Lettersdert Farm that they had invaded in 2000 at the height of chaotic land seizures.

Mumbengegwi, who evicted the families and war veterans with the help of riot police, allegedly declared that Lettersdert Farm would be turned into grazing land for his cattle.

Police evicted us from the farm and dumped us with all our belongings at the roadside. We have been staying in the open since our eviction, an evicted war veteran, Rodrick Moyo said.

Mumbengegwi confirmed the eviction and said the families were occupying his land illegally since he was allocated the farm in 2003 by the Lands Ministry.

No comment could be obtained from the Lands Ministry to verify the authenticity of Mumbengegwi’s land offer letter.

This follows the recent eviction of a war veteran in Nyamandlovu by Zanu (PF) militias and ex-combatants on charges of refusing to feed them. They looted maize and farm machinery before evicting Rejoice Sibanda-Ncube from Redwood Farm that she had occupied since previous owner, Alex Goosen had been evicted in 2000.
