Unfortunately and sadly there was no agreement, we are still worlds apart in terms of the key ministries to be shared. Mugabe and ZANU PF have not undergone a paradigm shift, they’ve not understood the value of the power-sharing agreement,’ Chamisa said.
The MDC national spokesman told Newsreel, ZANU PF wanted them to come into the agreement as junior partners and as mere accessories.’
They want us to be lipstick to a body that is ZANU PF. That is not going to work, infact we’ve said we are not going to countenance a situation whereby we will play second fiddle to ZANU PF,’ he said. Mugabe said on Monday he expected a unity government to be formed by the end of this week, ending an impasse with the MDC over cabinet posts. An outline agreement signed this month between Mugabe and Tsvangirai brought hope that political stability could reverse the country’s economic chaos. So far, Zimbabweans have seen little benefit from the deal.
Mugabe said before he left for the UN he had discussed the ministries and that there was no deadlock. Asked if the two leaders were going to meet anytime soon following the latest deadlock, Chamisa said; It’s out of sight. It’s not a possibility at the moment.’
He said the impasse would be referred to the mediator, former president of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki and the guarantors of the unity deal SADC and the African Union.
Chamisa disclosed for the first time that the contentious ministries were indeed Defence, Home Affairs, Finance, Foreign Affairs, Local government and Information.
It does not make sense that they want to hang on to all these key ministries, it does not wash up with the people of Zimbabwe Political analyst Isaac Dziya said it was sad that a nation, in desperate need of urgent help was being held to ransom by a few individual who seem oblivious to the mammoth task that lies ahead.
Zimbabweans are now in a state of resignation following the power-sharing deal. There was no need for Mugabe to fly to New York leaving the country hemorrhaging that bad. This I don’t care attitude only happens in Zimbabwe, anyway else, a leader would be out of job in no time at all,’ Dziya said.
