Hotel owner arrested for ignoring price controls

HARARE - Zimbabwean police have briefly detained top hotel boss, Shingi Munyeza on charges of breaching a state-imposed price ceiling on beverages sold in his Africa Sun Limited hotel chain.

The Africa Sun group includes Victoria Falls hotel, The Kingdom and Elephant Hills in Victoria Falls; Great Zimbabwe hotel in Masvingo, Troutbeck Resort in Nyanga, Carribea Bay in Kariba and Hwange Safari Lodge.

“We decided not to press any charges after management at the hotels undertook to review their pricing system,” National Incomes and Pricing Commission Chairman Godwills Masimirembwa said.

President Robert Mugabe’s government first introduced price controls for selected goods six years ago to snuff out a burgeoning black market where scarce goods were sold for up to ten times the state-imposed price.
