Police bar MDC rallies

Harare police today barred two MDC report-back rallies scheduled for Kuwadzana and Glen View, citing the outbreak of cholera as the reason for the ban.

Rallies are the only platform through which the MDC can communicate
with its members and any attempt to ban rallies is tantamount to
political suffocation.

While the MDC appreciates the magnitude of the cholera outbreak, we
believe that the police are playing games and the ban is part of a
cocktail of political measures to punish the MDC for not "playing ball"
in the dialogue process.

The police, who said they could not officially respond to our
notification letter because we had not supplied them with bond paper
since they have no stationery, did not say when the rallies will go
ahead.

Meanwhile, Zanu PF and army commander General Constantine Chiwenga,
continue to address several gatherings throughout the country. The MDC
also waits to see with eagerness whether the Zanu PF conference in
Bindura will proceed since cholera has virtually spread to all towns
and cities.
