Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)

Statement on the Africa National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) fact finding visit to Zimbabwe.

ZINASU hosted the ANCYL delegation to Zimbabwe over the weekend. The ANCYL cadres were led by the Vice president of the Youth League (YL) comrade Andile Lungisa . The purpose of their visit was to get a clear understanding of the prevailing political situation in the country and to find ways in which the YL can assist the youths and all Zimbabweans.

We applaud the efforts of our colleagues from South Africa as reflected by the visit and at the same time challenge them to take decisions that reflect a genuine desire to help Zimbabwe out of this mess. Given South Africa’s geo-political influence on Zimbabwe, we anticipate that the Youth League will play a progressive role in the discourse to unlock the current political crisis in our country.

The leadership of ZINASU formally met with the delegation on Sunday the 3th of November 2008. After a lengthy discussion, we agreed and adopted the following Resolutions:

·         To convene a summit of all youths in the SADC region,  with the

aim of building a solidarity movement that will advocate for reforms in Zimbabwe, preferably before the Summit of the SADC Heads of State on Zimbabwe.

·          The suffering of Zimbabweans is a serious concern in the region

and requires urgent attention.

·          The Government of Zimbabwe led by Robert Mugabe continues to

betray the aspirations of the people.

·         The ANCYL will assist in all possible ways, to improve the lives

of the people of Zimbabweans.

·          In their capacity as the Deputy President of the Pan-African

Youth Union (PYU), the Youth League will assist ZINASU which is the current Secretary General of the Southern Africa Students Union (SASU), in the ongoing processes of reviving the regional students’ body.

We intensely appreciate the efforts and initiatives of our brothers and sisters from South Africa in an effort to find an African solution to an African problem. On this note, we wish to firmly demand SADC leaders in particular and African leaders in general to fully appreciate and realize the need to vigorously and genuinely address the Zimbabwean question. We demand that SADC, the guarantors of Zimbabwe’s political agreement take decisive action at the forthcoming Heads of States summit.

For and on behalf of the Students Union,

Clever Bere

President
