Having heard submissions of the defence yesterday not to place Roy
Bennett on remand, as there was no basis at all in law to charge Roy
Bennett, Magistrate indicated that he would make a ruling today at
1430hrs.
Roy Bennett spent the night at Mutare remand prison.
MDC Manicaland and prison waders entered into an arrangement to allow
Roy Bennett to receive visitors between 0900hrs and 1200hrs and between
1400hrs and 1600hrs.
Roy Bennett is in good spirit and solid.
These charges are scandalous and politically motivated, and as is
emerging, being used for a deeper political agenda. Roy Bennett will
not be used as ransom and he will not accept to be horse traded for any
political convenience and manoeuvre.
We demand that the Inclusive government, in the interest of justice and
respect for human rights, sees to the immediate unconditional release
of Roy Bennett, Jestina Mukoko, WOZA leadership and members and all
political prisoners unharmed, as the government knows fully well that
there is no basis at law for charging and incarcerating any of the
political prisoners.
