Cricket South Africa resumes Zimbabwe tiesÂ
HARARE – Barely a year after cutting ties with Zimbabwe, Cricket South
Africa (CSA) has pledged to resume relations with the fraught country
and support efforts to build a proficient Test team, reports Cricinfo.Â
Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) chief executive Ozias Bvute said: "I can confirm
that the suspension of the agreement with our South African neighbours
has been lifted. We only need to sit down to work out the details." CSA
spokesperson Kass Naidoo, however, was less forthcoming and said any
policy issue regarding ZC would be discussed at the next board meeting
in February.Â
CSA, under former president Norman Arendse, had cut off ties with
Zimbabwe Cricket because of what Arendse termed was "the worsening
situation in Zimbabwe." At the time the move was greeted with surprise
as South Africa had been staunch supporters of Peter Chingoka and his
board. The power-sharing agreement between Robert Mugabe and Morgan
Tsvangirai, assuming it holds, makes a restoration of relations all the
more likely.Â
In November 2008 an inspection of facilities and infrastructure lead to
suggestions that Zimbabwe was still at least six months away from being
ready for Tests again. Bvute, however, feels otherwise. "We will
endeavor to shorten the period before readiness and have prepared
programs, such as playing in leagues in other countries, to ensure this
is realised." Bvute added that Zimbabwe's team, which beat Kenya 5-0 in
a recent ODI series, was making good progress.Â
Masvingo gear up for return to top league
MASVINGO – Relegated Zimbabwe cup kings, Masvingo United, are readying
for a quick return to the top flight football league next season if
plans put in place by club sponsor, Tanda "Mhunga" Tavaruva are
anything to go-by.Â
Masvingo United has drafted in the bulk of the Zimbabwe Football
Association (ZIFA) Eastern Region Division One players from its nursery
club Gutu Leopards in a bid to return to the premiership early next
year.
Poor results at the end of the 2008 season were exacerbated by a
weakened team when some of Masvingo's top players were sold to
premiership clubs such as Dynamos, Gunners, Highlanders and Eastern
Lions leaving the Great Zimbabwe side a weak team.
The likes of Warriors international Ovidy Karuru, the Dynamos duo of
Wonder Sithole and goalkeeper Tafadzwa Dube, and hard running
Highlanders forward Douglas Zimbango, all left Masvingo United before
the end of last year, a move that exposed the country’s third most
supported club.
Now club bankroller, Tavaruva, is once again assembling a strong side
ahead of the ZIFA Region Division One league, which is set to kick off
before the end of the month.Â
Warriors ready to roar in Cote D’Ivoire
HARARE – The Warriors are set to vent their anger at the inaugural
African Cup of Nations Championship following their failure to qualify
for both the 2010 Federation of International Football Association
(FIFA) World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations when they lock horns
with Ghana in the opening matches of the continental new tournament to
be held in Cote D’Ivoire next weekend.
Zimbabwe has been drawn in Group B alongside the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ghana and Libya respectively.
The Warriors will place their hopes on the trio Young Warriors-20
midfielder-cum-striker Ovidy Karuru, sharp shooting striker Tafadzwa
Rusike and tough tackling Archford Gutu to propel the hungry youthful
side.
Among other players expected to bring in the much needed contribution
are Dynamos defender Thomas Sweswe, Masvingo United’s hardman George
Magariro, CAPS United’s duo of David Kutyauripo and Method Mwanjali
with of course Gilbert Banda of Highlanders, who will be protecting
goalkeeper Washington Arubi on the new Warriors back.
Chidzambwa is expected to introduce first diminutive Clemence Matawu,
Carrington Gomba, Evans Chikwaikwai and Wonder Sithole in order to calm
the bulky of the young players, who need more exposure at this high
level of the competition.
Moyo wins SA road race
DURBAN – Zimbabwe international female long distance runner, Samukeliso
Moyo won R100 000 (about US$10 000) in the 20 kilometre Nedbank Durban
City Marathon race after coming first in this championship.
The veteran athlete beat a cluster of other top Southern African
Development Community (SADC) athletes, among them South Africa’s
Tshipfiwa Mundalamo, close rival Mamrolla Tjoka of Lesotho including
her Zimbabwean counterpart Thabita Tsatsa.
Runner up Tjoka clocked 2 hours 45 minutes ahead of South Africa’s
Tshiphiwa with 2 hours 47 minutes while another Zimbabwean athlete
Tsatasa came fourth.
Moyo, a regular runner at the Nedbank championship made her name
history by winning this top athletic championship after losing to the
Lesotho in November last year.
Ajax lose to Celtic 2-1
JOHANNESBURG – Former Wariors sharp shooting striker Wilfred Mugeyi’s
dream of winning South Africa’s ABSA premiership league as assistant
coach appears to be hitting a brick wall following Ajax Cape Town’s
unexpected 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bloemfontein Celtic on Sunday.
Celtic grabbed all their important goals through Moses Spandeel and
another gem of a goal from former Kaizer Chiefs forward Gert van
Schalkwaky to dash Ajax Cape Town’s hopes of ever overtaking Super
Sport United on the premiership pole position.
It appears that former Zimbabwe international on the technical
department for Super Sport United, Kaitano Tembo's side is on the verge
of returning their title as Ajax takes a nosedive in the race.
Despite losing 3-1 to Peter Ndlovu’s Thanda Royal Zulu on Sunday, Super
Sport United remained on top position with 38 points ahead of Esrom
Nyandoro’s Mamemoldi Sundowns, who are now on second position from the
14 team-league.
Kaizer Chiefs lose 2-1 to Swallows
JOHANNESBURG – Tinashe Nengomasha and Onismor Bhasera’s Kaizer Chiefs
suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Moroka Swallows in a thrilling
encounter strongly contested at Olympia Park Stadium in Rusternburg on
Sunday.
Swallows fired two goals through double scorer Sandile Ndlovu before
Chiefs pulled one back in the last minute of the match through hard
running Kaizer Motaung Jnr.
Chief's coach, Muhsin Ertugral, said that his charges were in terrific form, but blamed his strikers for failing to score.
"We created so many chances, but once again, our strikers let us down," said Etrugral in an interview after the match.
Kaizer Chiefs are now fifth on top of the ABSA premiership league log
standings following the defeat by Moroka Swallows in a match they were
expected to win in order to keep the fire burning.
Zim PSL to charge in US Dollars
BULAWAYO – Zimbabwe's Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs are crying foul
over the football administration body demanding that registration fees
be paid in US dollars.
Veteran football administrator, Kenny Ndebele, who is the PSL
secretary-general has hinted that the premiership clubs would pay
slightly above US$2 000 for the 2009 season, a development most clubs
believe would see some teams pulling out.
Dynamos, CAPS United and Black Rhinos feel the PSL would make some contributions to avert the pinch.
Ndebele said on top of the US$2 000, clubs will be also compelled to pay a whopping US$5 00 for player registration.
Newly promoted premiership clubs comprising Black Rhinos, Eagles,
Highway and Hwange would pay an extra US$1 000 for affiliation bringing
their total slightly above US$3 500.
"The clubs should not be worried about these figures as they will get
grants from the sponsors at the start of the season," said Ndebele.
He said the premiership clubs would undergo an induction course set for
February 28, which will take place at the capital-Harare, a development
aimed at educating the clubs about new football rules and regulations.
