Women from the country's political parties attended the ceremony that
was held in Harare where women from ZANU(PF), the two formations of the
MDC and various other organisations took turns to champion the cause of
women.
Among those who attended the ceremony, were Vice President Joice
Mujuru, Deputy Prime Minister Thokozani Khupe, Jacqueline Mutambara,
wife to Aurthur Mutambara. and women legislators from the country's
main parties.
The women draped in the party regalia observed a minute of silence for
the late Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's late wife Susan who died in
a car crash..
Mujuru, who was the main speaker at the function said it was unfortunate that the nation has lost a motherly figure in Susan.
I am sure that if Susan was alive, she could have been with us today.
She was our mother and we are going to miss her, she said.
Mujuru, in an apparent reference to Grace, said, any woman worth her salt must have attended the event.
We are here to celebrate the achievements of woman and any woman who
is a leader and is not here must ask herself why, she added.
Vice Prime Minister Khupe also said the nation was missing the motherly figure in Susan
Grace who is twice younger than Mugabe has found it difficult to fit in the shoes of first lady.
Unlike Mugabe's former wife, Sally who commanded respect among women
and the general public, Grace has been involved in a number of
controversies, resulting in concerns over her role.
Grace has been accused of plundering national resources and going on
lavish shopping and holiday sprees mainly in Asian countries.
She recently beat up a UK Times newspaper photographer while she was on a Holiday in Hong Kong.
In Zimbabwe, she is said to have acquired a number of properties some using state money.
