HARARE - ZIMBABWE'S biggest cellular network services provider, Econet, has established the Joshua Nkomo Scholarship Fund (JNSF), a pan-African scholarship fund for academically gifted Zimbabweans to pursue their high and ter

The fund is named after the founding father of the Southern African country.

Econet founder, Strive Masiyiwa, said the initiative was in honour of the late former vice president

He said the scholarship trust was not created simply because Dr Nkomo helped fight for the Econet license.

"I would have wanted to honour him even if he had not spoken out in
support of us. This was a great man and we want future generations of
leaders in Africa to remember his contribution," Masiyiwa said.

The fund is run as an independent institution from Econet with its own General Manager who reports to a board of trustees

Although currently assisting Zimbabwean students only, the JNSF will
ultimately be extended to other countries where Econet has operations.
The trust was the brain child of Econet Wireless founder Mr. Strive
Masiyiwa to in memory of the late Vice President.
