I won't live in mansion – Masunda

Much Masunda, the Mayor of Harare who was elected six months ago, made his first visit to the mayoral mansion recently and described it as "ostentatious." The dwelling was built in 1999/2000 by then mayor Solomon Tawengwa with the encouragement of Zanu (PF).

It comprises a main house with six bedrooms on the first floor, a
spacious functions area, an industrial kitchen, family kitchen, two
enormous lounges, dining room, an exotic mayor’s suite on the ground
floor, a powder room for ladies, large cloakroom, several lobbies and a
luxurious bar.

Imported Persian carpets are evident as one walks into the mansion.
Curtains worth $1,9 billion in 2000 were supplied and fitted, an
expense that riled the Combined Harare Residents Association who wanted
the house sold.

"I am not going to move in there, declared Masunda last month. It’s
not a priority. What is of priority is to fill the potholes, cut the
grass, remove rubble and waste and most importantly address the plight
of the workers who are failing to come to work because the economy has
been dollarized and we can’t afford it."
