Put Mugabe in dock

A former South African judge and international war crimes prosecutor said this week a decision to charge Sudan's president with war crimes set a precedent for similar action against Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe.

In an interview with an Australian newspaper, former Constitutional Court judge Richard Goldstone said he believed there was a lot of conduct on the part of Mugabe that warrants the attention of the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.

But he said since the International Criminal Court did not have jurisdiction over Zimbabwe because it was not party to the Rome Treaty, and it would be up to the Security Council to refer Zimbabwe to the court.

I would hope that it would consider that, he said.

The driver of the truck that killed Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's wife, Susan, appeared in court on Monday charged with culpable homicide.

Chinoona Mwanda, 35, was released on bail of Z100 and the case remanded to March 23.
