Tsvangirai snubs Mugabe birthday bash

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai declined an invitation to Mugabe's US$250 000 birthday bash choosing instead to visit the run down Harare Central Hospital with Deputy Prime Minister Thokozani Khupe and the Minister of Health, Dr Henry Madzorera.

Mugabe who turned 85 was desperate to have Tsvangirai at the 21st February Movement bash (held on the 28th) and in the eyes of many commentators add what would have surely been a political trophy to his cabinet. This they say would have also brought him closer to more visible recognition of his blood stained presidency.

Tsvangirai who won the only credible elections in March last year however schemed wisely and engaged in an activity that was in stark contrast to Mugabe's extravagance and insensitivity of feasting while half the country faces starvation. The MDC leader is said to be planning on raising US$1,5 million to help Harare Central Hospital resume normal operations.

Former ZBC Radio 3 DJ and new Tsvangirai spokesman James Maridadi told journalists, The PM received the invite, acknowledged it and sent his congratulations. He, however, regretted that he would not attend because he felt it was a Zanu PF function.' Meanwhile Tsvangirai himself turns 57 on March 10 but has already insisted his birthday will be a private family affair.
