Fred M’membe, managing editor of the Post newspaper, a majorshareholder in the airline which suspended operations in January, wassummoned to explain the discrepancies, Inspector General of PoliceFrancis Kabonde told AFP.
"I can confirm that M’membe was summoned by the police… This is in connection with the issues of Zambian Airways," he said.
Zambia Airways owes various creditors, including governmentinstitutions, $29m. Last month, the Police, Drug Enforcement Commission(DEC) and the Anti-Corruption Commission started joint investigationsinto airline’s finances.
The Post has been critical of President Rupiah Banda’s government. Lastmonth, thousands of ruling party supporters protested in Lusaka againstits coverage of the government action.
Banda accused the Post of criticising him in order to pressure hisgovernment to bail out Zambian Airways. The airline suspendedoperations after failing to pay creditors.
