BULAWAYO - Three police officers are languishing in remand prison following their arrest last week on charges of beating and tortu

The police officers, Thokozani Pemba, Walter Chigangaidze and Costern
Nyoni, arrested and tortured Israel Nyoni in a bid to force him to
admit to being a stock thief. The incident took place on February 2 at
Douglasdale area, near Burnside low density suburb.

The three officers appeared at the Bulawayo Magistrates Court on Friday
before Magistrate Bianca Makwande facing charges of assault.

Magistrate Makwande remanded the men who deny the torture charges.

In his evidence before the court, Ncube, led by prosecutor, Andrew
Marimo, told the court that he was confronted by the three police
officers at Burnside Garage and accused of stealing and slaughtering a
beast.

They took me to the scene where the beast had been slaughtered. The
trio started assaulting me on the soles of my feet with a baton stick
several times while they handcuffed my hands at the back. They took
turns to assault me and get me to admit to stealing a beast. I
sustained serious injuries under my feet and both hands and had to be
admitted to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH), Nyoni told the court.

A medical report produced as an exhibit in court says Nyoni's injuries
were severe and that he had haematona on both hands and feet.

After his release from UBH, Nyoni reported the case to the police
leading to the arrest of the three police officers who on the day had
been on anti-stock theft patrols in the Douglasdale area on the day.

The police officers, through their lawyer, Robinson Mahachi, deny the
charges and instead accuse Nyoni of trying to flee from arrest. They
claimed that Ncube sustained the injuries while trying to run away from
them barefoot.
