Beitbridge gets town clerk

beitbridgeBULAWAYO - Beitbridge Town Council has finally appointed a town clerk after two years running with an acting clerk since the local authority was granted town status by the Local Government and Urban Development Ministry.

Simon Muleya has been acting Town Clerk for the Beitbridge Council for two years. The Zimbabwean was told that Local Government Board last week appointed Dr Sipho Singo to head the local authority.

Beitbridge Council faces perennial challenges of water shortages, constant sewer pipe bursts and failure to collect refuse. Singo, a local businessman and educationist, said he was geared to change the fortunes facing the local authority.

“I am ready to make the Beitbridge Council start working again, for the council to function properly and to fulfil its vision,” said Singo.

Singo previously worked as the headmaster at Vhembe High School before leaving to lecture at the University of Zimbabwe. He later left the country for other lecturing posts in South Africa and Namibia until 1997 when he decided to go back to Zimbabwe and venture into private business

“I am aware that council has no adequate resources, but we are saying the local authority belongs to the people and therefore it needs support from the very people for it to grow and be able to be recognised both nationally and internationally,” he said.
