ZIMBABWES shaky unity government hit a new low yesterday when the Movement for Democratic Change angrily challenged President Robert Mugabes decision to keep central bank governor Gideon Gono.

On Monday Mugabe said: There are sharpened knives aimed at beheading this man [Gono]. No one in this country [will] dispute that Gono and the Reserve Bank worked tirelessly and resolutely to avoid the collapse of this country.

Stung by Mugabes comments, the MDC said Gonos appointment remained unlawful and must be reversed.
The MDC also wants Attorney General Johannes Tomana removed.
The central bank and the Attorney-Generals office are standing between Zimbabwe and progress, the MDC said.
We call upon SADC and the AU, as the guarantors of the [unity government] to adjudicate over this issue as a matter of urgency, because it shakes the foundation and threatens the health, stability and life of the inclusive government.
