SA to host women’s nations cup

footballJOHANNESBURG - South Africa will next year host the 2010 Women's African Cup of Nations, officials have told The Zimbabwean. The event will be held after the FIFA 2010 World Cup.

“South African football association (SAFA) will host the 2010 Women African Cup of Nations. The decision was endorsed by the national executive committee (NEC) following the initiative by SAFA president, Molefi Oliphant. Oliphant successfully engaged the continental football governing body (CAF) to host the tournament,” said SAFA spokesman, Morio Sanyane.

The NEC has tentatively set out October 2010 as a date for the tournament. SAFA chief executive officer, Raymond Hack, said the host city would be determined by the NEC at a later stage. “SAFA regions are afforded an opportunity to host the tournament through a bidding process, obviously the infrastructure will be ready and available to our regions as part of the world cu legacy,” he said.

According to Hack, the NEC has also reiterated that the SAFA elections will go ahead in September as determined by the constitution and candidates have been urged to exercise fair play during election hearing. South Africa previously hosted the rugby and cricket world cups and the African Nations Cup with resounding success.
