According to chairman, Addison Chiware, the Union initially bid to host the mens showpiece but we have been given the womens games as well after Angola had communicated their failure to hold the games to FIBA. Chiware boasted of successfully hosting other regional competitions in the past.
We have already successfully hosted two regional competitions, namely the senior womens Zone Six basketball qualifiers and the Under 16 girls and boys Zone Six Championships, and this latest development is testimony of the growing confidence FIBA has in us, he said.
The week-long club showdown set for August 22-29 will save as qualifiers for the African Championships. The clubs from the visiting nine nations will battle-it-out for the available two slots to the continental showcase.
The defending regional champions, Mozambique, will enjoy the privilege of fielding three teams at the womens tournament. The other Zone Six countries, including Zimbabwe, are represented by only two. Angola enjoys the same privilege as Mozambique in the mens showpiece as they set eyes on defending their championship title in the mens showpiece, in November.
Zimbabwe will be represented by national giants, JBC and Varsity, in the womens competition to be held at Harares City Sports Center. Raiderz and JBC will fight for honours in the mens showpiece. Chiware said hosting the championships next month would be a morale booster for local basketball players.
This competition promises to be one of the biggest we have ever hosted with over 11 teams expected to grace the events, including four Olympians from Angola. Already Zambia, South Africa, Mozambique and Angola have confirmed their participation, he said.
