Chombo gets tough on corruption

chomboHARARE - Local Government Minister, Ignatius Chombo has warned councillors against awarding themselves allowances for attending council meetings, saying a continuation of the practice will result in dismissal. (Pictured: Ignatius Chombo, Local Government Minister)

“Some councillors have already resolved to access benefits like cell phones, stands, laundry allowances and meals during council meetings, disturbingly before they come to grips with the demands of service delivery agenda,” said Chombo in the circular.

“Worse still some councillors are “double dipping” to the extent that they get transport allowances even though they are transported home in council vehicles. Councillors should desist from such practices as failure to do so will result in dismissal.”

Chombo has, in the past, fired Mayors and local authority officials mostly those from the MDC – on various charges, replacing them with of Zanu (PF). The move has, however, backfired as evidenced by the resultant collapse in service delivery.
