Climate change serious – Govt

environmentBULAWAYO The Zimbabwean Government is concerned about the effect of climate change on the country, said Environment Management Agency Matabeleland region manager, Chipo Mpofu.

The high frequency of droughts and floods is linked to global climate change. Several climate studies suggest that water resources in the country are expected to dwindle and the evergreen forests of the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe may be reduced to seasonal forests, she said.

Mpofu said there were fears that some parts of the country, especially in the Matabeleland region, may gradually become deserts.

It is clear that the impact of climate change on Zimbabwe could negatively impact our efforts to achieve sustainable development. The Government of Zimbabwe views global climate change as a serious issue. The challenge for the country is how to develop adaptation strategies that can mitigate the diverse and complex impacts of climate change, she said.
