Gweru Mayor, Councillor Mufunde, laid to rest

The Mayor of Gweru, Councillor Farai Desmond Mufunde who died on Monday was buried at Mtapa Cemetery in Gweru. He was 60 years old. Clr Mafunde, died at Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare, where he was receiving treatment.
He was born on 10 June 1949 and was elected mayor of Gweru last year when he won the March council elections for Ridgemond area.


Several senior MDC officials including the national spokesperson, Hon. Nelson Chamisa, the secretary for Local Government Senator Sessel Zvidzai and his deputy Last Maengahama, Mkoba MP, Hon. Amos Chibaya and Gweru Urban MP, Rodrick Rutsvara attended the burial.

Kariba mayor Clr Nicholas Hwindiri, the mayor of Kwekwe, Clr Shadreck Tobaiwa and Masvingo mayor Clr Femias Chakabuda also attended the burial.

Speakers described the late mayor as a humble and dedicated MDC cadre who had fought hard for democracy since the formation of the MDC in 1999.

His death was a serious blow to the people of Gweru as it followed hard on the heels of the death of the Gweru-Chirumanzu Senator Patrick Kombayi on Saturday.

Clr Mafunde is survived by his wife, Rosemary, four children and four grandchildren.
