SA farmers exploit Zim immigrants

farm_workersJOHANNESBURG - The South African Labour Department is investigating farmers in the Limpopo Province, amid allegations that they are exploiting undocumented Zimbabwean immigrants working for them. A Limpopo-based official of the department confirmed the probe, which he said began last week, after some of the exploited Zimbabweans reported the matter to Lawyers fo

We received the report and began our investigations against the farmers last week, said the spokesperson, Page Boikanyo.

I cannot say when the investigations will be completed because we have just begun and a lot of ground needs to be covered before we finish. We want to get to the root of this matter.

The farmers, most of them in Mogwadi, near Musina, are said to be overworking Zimbabwean illegal immigrants on the farms, after which they pay them a paltry R400, a 12,5 kilogram bag of maize-meal and a pocket of potatoes per month.

Limpopo is adjacent to Zimbabwes border with South Africa and most of the immigrants pass through it as they continue to enter their countrys more prosperous southern neighbour in pursuit of better life opportunities.
