HARARE - Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has appointed a former no-nonsense Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) senior officer to his government security team.

Tsvangirai appointed Emmanuel Chimwanda, a former senior assistant Commissioner, to the post of director of security in the prime ministers office.

Chimwanda is best remembered for the arrest of the late notorious war veterans leader Chenjerai Hitler Hunzvi. Hunzvi had led Zanu (PF) supporters and war veterans on a violent orgy in Bikita during the 2000 elections.

Chimwanda is also widely credited with setting up the anti-corruption units within the police force.

He has worked as the head of ZRP human resources and finance departments. His previous posts were as officer in charge of Harare police province and as officer commanding Midlands and Masvingo regions.

Chimwanda who during his tenure in the police force, built himself the reputation of being a true policemen, was later transferred to police headquarters.

He was relegated to the commissioners pool before quitting the force. He remains one of the few police officers who refused to play to the whims of the Zanu (PF) politicians.

Chimwanda holds a masters degree in business administration. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and studied policing in the United Kingdom.
