Vodacom to feature Warriors players

footballJOHANNESBURG This years Vodacom soccer Challenge, to be played in South Africa next month, will showcase some of the best in Zimbabwean talent, with seven Warriors players taking part in the annual event. English Premiership club, Manchester City, will battle it out with Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in the event that begins on July 18.


There is at least one Warriors player in each of the three teams, key among them THE Warriors captain, Benjani Mwaruwari, who turns out for the star-studded City.

Naturena-based glamour club Kaizer Chiefs boasts the highest number of Zimbabwean players in its ranks, after their recent signing of Warriors central defender, Thomas Sweswe from Dynamos and youth international striker, Knowledge Musona from Aces Youth Academy.

Before signing the players two weeks ago, Chiefs already had Warriors defensive midfielder, Tinashe Nengomasha and skilful left-back Onismor Bhasera.

Pirates on the other hand have tough defender, Zvenyika Makonese, and dreadlocked striker, Gilbert Mushangazhike, who are also expected to spice up the 10th anniversary of the annual event, which preambles the South African Premiership season.

Sweswe is upbeat about his chance of returning to the South African Premiership and his chance of taking part in the event.

I worked very hard for this chance and I am very happy that it has finally come, said the dependable defender. I will make sure that I do my best for both the club that has shown so much faith in me and my career as well.

Sweswe is making an emotional return to South Africa, having previously played for Manning Rangers alongside former Highlanders teammate, Dazzy Kapenya.

The players left unceremoniously, after the club was relegated and reportedly failed to pay them some of the money owed to them.
