Zim puts pressure on SA

Cape Town - There were an estimated three to four million Zimbabweans in South Africa and their numbers put pressure on the local economy, President Jacob Zuma said on Sunday.

“Precisely because of the size of South Africa and its economy, Zimbabweans tended to come here in big numbers. Now that affects South Africa,” he acknowledged during an interview on SABC television.

This was an important point to take into account when dealing with the Zimbabwean situation.

“It’s not just a situation that affects Zimbabwe. It affects the region because Zimbabweans leave for places such as Botswana, Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia.

“It’s a practical issue because Zimbabwe is a neighbour. Correcting the Zimbabwean situation is important, because it does ease the pressure that you would have in South Africa.

“The estimation is that between three and four million Zimbabweans are here and that’s not a small number.”
