Abuse of children for not paying fees

BULAWAYO - Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA) has set up a committee to investigate the abuse of school children who have failed to pay school fees.

In a statement released by the organization this week, BPRA said it received several reports of victimization and abuse of children who failed to pay school fees by teachers and other school authorities in the city.

Following allegations that some school children are going through torrid times in schools, we have set up a committee of 10 general councillors to look into the alleged abuse, the BPRA statement said.
The committee will investigate the abuse through engagement with pupils and teachers in the mentioned schools. A report will be complied and submitted to the Minister of Education and to the Regional Education Director.

The residents association said it received several reports of children being punished, barred from lessons after failure to pay fees and extra incentives meant for teachers. It said this is in sharp violation of the Education Act which indicates that no pupils should be punished for failing to pay fees or any other levies due to schools.
This came after BPRA last week discouraged parents from paying extra incentives to teachers. They said that the government was responsible for paying them, not parents.
