Debate over mayors retirement package

VICTORIA FALLS - The cash-strapped municipality is in a quandary over the former executive mayor, Tose Sansoles, retirement package. The Ministry of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development approved that a US$181 858 package plus other benefits. But, the council has expressed their concern that the payment would disadvantage the local residents.


The council was instructed to sell Sansole the Mayoral vehicle, a Volvo S60 Sedan, at book value, provide him with a cell phone and line and pay him a four month salary gratuity for every year served at current rates without deductions.
In addition, the municipality was also directed to sell the house the mayor is currently occupying and conclude all transfer modalities within two months, with Sansole getting 30 per cent of the sale.

In this light, council has resolved to seek clarification from Minister Ignatius Chombo over the directive.
