Let the people decide

Zanu (PF)s obsession with the Kariba Draft constitution is disturbing. The news this week that the party is deploying its murderers and torturers around the country to enforce people to embrace the draft is devastating.

This party of violence is just not prepared to let the people of Zimbabwe be informed about the choices facing them and then decide for themselves. It just wants its own way every time – no matter whether that is good for the country and the future of Zimbabweans or not.

We all know that what is good for Zanu (PF) has proved to be bad for the majority of Zimbabweans, as well as for future generations. Zanu (PF) is in one mode only – self-preservation. If the party insists on bludgeoning people into accepting the Kariba Draft during the new constitutions consultation phase, we can bet our last US$ that the people will reject it at the referendum. Then what? Do we go back to the present constitution? Or will the Kariba Draft simply forced upon us, as happened in 1999 voted NO at the referendum? The people need answers to these questions. We have a right to know.

A possible solution would be to prepare two or three drafts and give people a choice. Let the NCA prepare its own draft. Let the parliamentary committee prepare its own draft. Then present them to the people to decide. This may be the only way to avoid a stalemate or a repeat of 1999.

There is no question about it. We have to have a new constitution. The much-amended one we have today is in nobodys interest except that of Mugabe and Zanu (PF).
We ask only one thing dont beat the people into submission once again.

Word
Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your justice like the great deep.
O LORD, you preserve both man and beast.
How priceless is your unfailing love!
Both high and low among men
find refuge in the shadow of your wings. Psalm 36 vs. 5 7
