Police storm constitution workshop

policeBULAWAYO - Police last week Wednesday arrested the leader of a youth organisation and branded a workshop on constitutional debate illegal. The workshop had been organized by Youth Initiative for Democracy in Zimbabwe (YIDEZ) to educate youths about the crafting of the new constitution.

However, armed police stopped the workshop and forced more than 30 YIDEZ members to disperse. Relating the incident to The Zimbabwean, YIDEZ Coordinator, Tsepiso Helen Mpofu, said that although she was not detained, she was harassed. The police warned her not to organise future meetings or workshops without police clearance.

I reminded them that workshops dont need police clearance. They then accused YIDEZ of misleading youths on issues of democracy, said Mpofu.
