Obert Nyoni from Jambezi said baboons last week killed 12 chickens and five goats belonging to the villagers. He said several other people in the area had complained of having their chickens and goats killed by the animals.
The baboons are taking advantage of the green vegetation caused by last season’s rains to reach homesteads under the cover of thick and tall grass and mount surprise attacks on our animals. The situation is worse during weekdays when children are at school, as parents face a dilemma of guarding both gardens and their homes, said Charity Sando, another villager.
The baboon population is reported to have doubled in the area compared to previous years.
