The youthful coach also became the first coach to inflict defeat on Dynamos since Elvis Chiweshe took over the managerial reins at the club from David “Yogi” Mandigora in April.
Substitute Tendai “DJ Malaika” Nyamadzawo was the hero of the day for CAPS United as he scored the decisive goal that counted for CAPS United to retain their status as CUP Kings of domestic football. Nyamadzawo scored after 110 minutes of football action as the two teams could not be seperated in regulation time.
Although the match did not live up to its billing in terms of the quality that was expected in that contest, it did not matter to Chitembwe after he won his first silverware since he started his coaching career a few years back.
And, Chitembwe, who had become a subject of ridicule by the team’s fans who were disappointed by the team’s performance in the past games deserves all the honour and reverence especially after stopping Dynamos’ unbeaten run since Chiweshe took over from Mandigora.
By winning the Nestle Charity Cup, he gave the club’s supporters a moment of magic to savour and, he summed it all up thus: “I am delighted to have won my first silverware as coach. I would like to thank supporters for rallying behind the team. It’s a great achievement for me as coach. I hope the team will continue to perform like this,” said the former Kiglon coach after the match.
“I am particularly thrilled that we are the first team to stop Dynamos’ unbeaten run.”
Dynamos have been unbeaten since Chiweshe took over in April and only Monomotapa managed a 1-1 draw and Black Rhinos (0-0). But, all that changed on Sunday following CAPS United’s goals from Leonard Tsipa and Nyamadzawo who scored in extra time after Dynamos had equalised through Benjamin Marere after controlling the ball well before firing it past goalkeeper Eddie Sibanda
The victory reasserted CAPS United’s dominance in knock out competitions. The Green Machine have now won the last three major knockout tournaments, going back to last year when they won the CBZ FA Cup and the ABC Sup8r, and beating Dynamos on all three occasions along the way.
They booted out their arch rivals from the ABC Sup8r and the CBZ FA Cup in the semi-finals. Dynamos coach Chiweshe said he knew that his team was going to lose one day.
“I knew that one day we will be defeated. I was expecting it because a cup game is the same as gambling. “I think we made two blunders and were punished for that. The players went to sleep in the last minutes because they thought they were going into the penalty shootout.
“CAPS United adjusted well and were very aggressive but our players didnt change their type of play. “I am confident we will win our league match against them and I dont believe that they are our bogey side. But I am happy for them,” said Chuchu.
