Farmers project low wheat harvest

CHECHECHE Farmers have complained about exorbitant fertilizer prices despite the recent price cuts.

Concerned farmers told The Zimbabwean that the high prices would undoubtedly impact this years winter wheat output.

A 50kg of fertilizer costs between US$28 and US$30, far beyond the reach of most farmers.

The output is likely to be lower because fertilizer, which is the major cost centre, has not been easy for farmers to buy, said an expert from Agricultural Rural Extension Services.

Farmers also appealed to ZESA Holdings to honour its pledge and dedicate power for winter wheat farming.

There is need to irrigate the wheat consistently, hence there is need for a constant supply of electricity, he said.

A local agronomist, Philip Chauke, urged the inclusive government to dedicate funds to training programmes as most farmers resettled under the chaotic land reform lacked expertise.

We would like to see a sizeable amount of money going towards short training for farmers so that they can effectively utilize the inputs sourced by the Finance ministry and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai on his recent tour to Europe, he said.
