Man sues police for assault

police_beating__ceviliansBULAWAYO - A man is suing the police for thousands of US dollars after officers allegedly assaulted him for causing a car accident. Silas Chikowore sustained severe injuries during the beatings. He had parked his car in the central business district (CBD) at night when another motorist reversed into it.

Not long after the crash, police officers arrived who Chikowore suspected to be friends of the man who crashed into his car. They told me to follow them to Drill Hall traffic police section. I suspected these police officers were friends with this guy because before we reached the police station they parked at a dark corner and started beating me and accusing me of having caused the accident, said Chikowore.

According to Chikowore, the police officers beat him while he was handcuffed.

When they entered the charge office I was still bleeding profusely and they told the officer on duty that I injured myself by falling down. An ambulance was called and they also told the ambulance guys who took me to hospital that I had fallen. At Mpilo hospital I had several stitches and I had to foot the bills myself.

Chikowores matter is now being handled by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR).
