Mushonga robber re-arrested

christopher_mushongaHARARE One of the men implicated in the robbery of Chris Mushonga (Pictured) has been re-arrested after he escaped from Parirenyatwa Hospital last week. Steven Zimowa, who is being detained at Harare central police station, is alleging that he paid Prison guards who were guarding him US$900 for his release.

According a senior prison guard of Harare Remand Prison, an identification parade was conducted at last Friday at Harare Central Police station where Zimowa positively identified one of the officers whom he claims to have given the money.

“We asked him why he broke the hospital window and got out through the gutter when he had paid for his release. He apologized and said that he made the allegations up as a result of torture by the police. The truth is that when he was admitted to prison we took all his belongings and he had no cash with him, and we wondered were he had got the US$900 which he claims to have given the officers,” said the officer.

Zimowa and five others, namely, Antony Kumbula, Asan Chikwanda, Tendai Jongwe, Crispen Sibanda and Tichaona Soda are facing murder charges, after they were arrested for robbing International Co-operation Minister Priscilla Misihairambwi-Mushonga’s Mount Pleasant house in June. Then men severely assaulted Chris Mushonga, resulting in his death last week.
