Soldiers assault Bitis gardener

soldier_zimHARARE - A gardener at the residence of MDCs secretary-general and Finance Minister, Tendai Biti, was on Saturday attacked by three armed soldiers at the ministers house in Highlands.

The attack on Howard Makonzi comes barely a week after Biti received an envelope with a live bullet inside. The package was delivered to the MDC secretary-generals home with an accompanying letter stating: Raira nhaka (Sort out your Estate).

According to Makonzi, he was walking past the residence of Zimbabwe National Army Commander, General Philip Valerio Sibanda when the soldiers on guard started following him. As he approached the ministers residence, the soldiers asked him to stop, but in fear he proceeded walking and the soldiers started running after him.

As Makonzi reached the house, he found it locked and had no keys. The soldiers then started beating him all over the body until he fell down. The soldiers never uttered a word, but stopped beating Makonzi after he called for help.

Makonzi received serious injuries on the face and had to be rushed to hospital where he was admitted for a night. A police report has since been made, and the soldiers have been identified, but no arrests have been made.
