Stock theft increase

MUTARE - High rates and licence fees being levied by the city council have caused cattle rustling to escalate in the province, local butchery owners have said. The rates and licences being charged by council were described by the butchery owners as exorbitant and unrealistic considering the macro-economic environment they were operating in. They said due to exorbitant charges they had been forced to turn to unregistered abattoirs for meat.

The council is levying between US$800-US$1200 for a shop licence and butchery permit fees, according to butchery owners who attended the launch of the Business Against Stocktheft Forum on Friday. If we go to registered abattoirs for meat, our profit is very low because abattoir owners claim they are being exorbitantly levied by the same council, said one butchery owner who refused to be named.

Meanwhile, players in the meat industry and police in Manicaland have launched the Business Against Stocktheft Forum. Among other functions, the forum will conduct awareness campaigns aimed at sensitizing the community on the need to eradicate stock theft.
