Sulphuric acid spill

KWEKWE - There are strong fears than more than 1000 litres of sulphuric acid spilt by a fuel tanker last week might infiltrate local streams feeding into nearby Sebakwe and Munyati rivers when the rains come.

The sulphuric acid was spilt on Friday when a Harare-bound tanker overturned just outside Kwekwe. A water scientist has already been dispatched to the site. “We have sent our water expert to assess the damage. But what I can assure you is that all our reservoirs are safe from contamination since our major water source, Sebakwe dam is located upstream. As for the streams feeding the rivers, the area lies under the jurisdiction of the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA),” said a Kwekwe city council official.

Although ZINWA officials could not be reached for comment, the council official said that it was possible to neutralize the acid before it reached the rivers.
