Two weeks after the start of the official process was delayed by supporters of Robert Mugabe, it faces another challenge. Civil society members are accusing politicians of hijacking the process, saying that it is undemocratic, defective and will produce a flawed document, and are calling for a mass public consultation process like Kenyas. ZANU-PF wants the new constitution to be based on a draft drawn up in 2007, but critics say it gives the president too much power, and are demanding that government and parliament halt the process.
Lovemore Madhuku, Chairman of the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA), a non-governmental organization comprised of civic organizations calling for a “people-driven constitutional process”, will discuss the process and the likelihood of true constitutional reform in Zimbabwe.
Organised by the Royal African Society and the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum
This meeting is open to the public
