According to an MDC councillor in Karoi town, situated about 204 kilometers north-west of Harare, some volunteers who are Zanu PF supporters, are angry because they want to be paid for the work. ”Its a pity that Zanu PF supporters still believe people should be paid for keeping our towns and surrounding areas clean and they are threatening us. We have never had a contract with these volunteers…”
The councillor said no police report was made because “we are not moved by these threats”. Another MDC woman member added her voice saying, ”We are trying to keep our town clean as it was not well-looked after by council workers who were facing their own challenges and we do not think we want money out of it. This is out of our will and that’s why its voluntary.”
The clean-up campaign has transformed major towns including the resort town of Kariba, Karoi, Chinhoyi, Kadoma and Chegutu towns in Mashonaland West province. Last year Zimbabwe suffered a serious cholera outbreak largely due to lack of sanitation and water facilities, although lack of hygiene was also a major factor.
