Constitution-making process in limbo

HARARE The issue of funding has stalled the constitution making process, according to the Parliamentary Select Committee who called an emergency meeting on Wednesday. In separate interviews this week, the three co-chairpersons of the committee conceded that funding had stalled progress but denied that members had downed tools.

“We have not downed tools as reported at the weekend, but we are saying it is not part of our mandate as the select committee to look for donors or to be involved in fund-raising activities. The government should provide us with the money,” said Mangwana.

“We have prepared a budget of US$4,2 million and submitted it to Treasury, but there has not been any response. We cannot continue using our own resources and calling people from as far as Hwange to attend meetings. What will be the purpose of these meetings when there is no money?” Mwonzora echoed the same sentiments. He, however, urged Zanu (PF) to submit names of their MPs whom they have seconded to chair the various thematic committees.
