The MDC favours a Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission that would see perpetrators of violence being brought to book for their actions. Zanu (PF) on the other hand said the process could only succeed when there was amnesty for all perpetrators of violence – a demand that has been shot down by victims and civic groups. The Zimbabwean was told that due to the failure to agree on how to lead the process, the two parties agreed on the need for consultants to advise the Organ on National Healing on the best way forward. John Nkomo, one of the Ministers of the Organ on National Healing, Reconciliation and Integration confirmed the development, saying the consultants would report directly to the Organ.
“The consultants main duties are to do research on how other countries achieved a national healing and reconciliation. They will then offer the Organ some options that we can consider,” Nkomo confirmed in an interview. Political leaders have indicated that a healing and reconciliation process was paramount to unite Zimbabweans. Victims of political violence have demanded compensation and the prosecution of perpetrators. Churches on the other hand have said the political parties should not lead the sensitive process as they are interested parties.
