ETD holders turned away

BEITBRIDGE Travellers crossing into South Africa on Emergency Travel Documents (ETD) issued in either Bulawayo or Gweru have been turned away at the border. Orders given by the Zimbabwean police where to refuse entry to people travelling on documents from the two cities following a robbery at the Gweru passport office.

“We have, with effect from Friday, stopped clearing Zimbabwean travellers with ETDs obtained from both Bulawayo and Gweru at the request of our Zimbabwean counterparts,” an immigration official confirmed. It is understood that the suspension would be lifted as soon as the Zimbabwean government had completed its investigations.

Home Affairs Co-Minister Kembo Mohadi confirmed the development and expressed concern that the stolen ETD forms had surfaced in Bulawayo as well. “A number of ETD books went missing in Midlands Province and currently we are conducting intensive investigations into the matter,” he said. Mohadi said a substantial number of fake ETDs that had been produced in Gweru and Bulawayo were recently intercepted at Beitbridge and Plumtree border posts.
