Gwanda drags ZINWA to court

tap_waterBULAWAYO----Gwanda Town Council, with the support of other small towns in Matabeleland, have dragged Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) to court over its refusal to handover the water system to them.

This comes only a week after ZINWA officials made a report to police seeking arrest of Gwanda Mayor Lionel Decker and eviction of council workers from their premises. Decker had dispatched his council workers to occupy ZINWA offices after the water controlling bodys resistance to hand over the water system.

Early this year the government issued a directive that ZINWA returns all water reticulation systems to urban councils. This led to an outbreak of water borne diseases like cholera.

However, this week Decker said municipalities of Gwanda, Beitbridge, Hwange and Plumtree have resolved to take the ZINWA to court for violating the government directive to handover water reticulation system.

“We stand our ground as local authorities and insist that water purification should go to the local authorities because ZINWA has failed us, hence we are challenging the legality of them controlling water in our towns, said Decker.
