Journalists in bid to reclaim the VMCZ

HARARE - The belated Annual General Meeting of the Voluntary Media Council which was finally held in Harare on Saturday had to be postponed following disagreements on key agenda issues of elections and the amending of the constitution.

All posts of the board were to be contested for, save for the post of the Chairman and his Vice. This did not go down well with journalists who felt that they were not duly consulted and wanted the two key positions to go before members for a vote.

The VMCZ has 13 board members of which six are lawyers. This composition was supposed to be changed with an amendment of the constitution to include other media representatives. Zimbabwe Union of Journalists President, Matthew Takaona, said that it was necessary to adjourn the AGM because members were not duly consulted. “The composition of VMCZ is a mockery to the journalism profession,” he said.

Following a stalemate, council chairman Muchadei Masunda then adjourned the AGM. The board is now due to decide on a new date for the election of new board members.
