Malawi govt to devalue the Kwacha – Puts blame on the opposition

malawi_currencyThe Malawi Government has finally bowed down to calls to devalue the kwacha amid growing scarcity of forex in the country.

A cabinet minister confided to a Nyasa Times journalist, that after thorough consultations, it has become clear that the Kwacha will have to be devalued as the only alternative to the current scourge.

However, the official said that a committee is being put in place, which shall comprise of selected members of the press to prepare the mindsets of the people on the possible devaluation of the kwacha.

As you know, Bingu (President Wa Mutharika) is supposed to be the economic engineer, so the general public may not take kindly to the devaluation. Devaluating the kwacha is as good as devaluating the president.

Prices of essential goods shall sky rocket and the cost of living shall be unbearable, observed the minister. So we are trying to get on board very influential figures in the media to try and brainwash the public on the impending devaluation. Our strategy is to put the blame on the opposition, he said.

The minister also expressed fears that the Malawi economy may collapse in a matter of months if the forex issue is not addressed urgently.

We are trying to borrow a leaf from Zimbabwe where Mugabe blamed the British and Americans for sabotaging the Zimbabwean economy and the masses believed him and went on to support his presidency.

At first, we wanted to put the blame on the Indians and the Chinese as the culprits trying to destroy our economy. But after much thought, we felt that could backfire especially now that China is our main development partner.

So we decided to heap the blame on the opposition as the ones conniving with foreigners to hoard the forex and ruin our economy. We shall go to the extent of asking the public to search in homes of prominent opposition figures for the forex, said the senior government official.

We have done it before. We have very intelligent chaps at Television (TVM) and Radio (MBC), who are capable of brainwashing the public within a specified period, boasted the minister.

When the hate for the opposition is won, Wa Mutharika government shall swiftly devalue the kwacha and continue the hate speech on the opposition.

That way, our economic woes shall solely be blamed on the opposition, while keeping the President and our party as saints.

.

The minister revealed that prominent figures in the media shall be met on Thursday 10th September and the campaign shall begin by this weekend.
